For those of you scrolling down to the end (who knows if that will happen), here I am at the beginning.
It is August 18, 2015. Two weeks from today, I will arrive in Paris, France, where I will work for 10 months as an au pair. If you’re wondering what an au pair is, I have heard it called by many names: fille au pair, jeune fille au pair, nounou, babysitter. That last one might make the most sense. For most of this year, I will be living and working with a French family, looking after its three girls and learning about the city they live in.
Even now, there are so many things I could say about this experience. But I would rather wait until I can show you, or at least try to. If you are reading this, chances are I already have started.
So let me end this obligatory first post by explaining the title I chose for this blog: des mots // du monde. Des mots just means words. On its own, du monde means of the world. I am not going to pretend that I know anything about words, or anything about the world, or that I will even get to that many places in the world. Just consider this my first attempt at French wordplay.
If it was a total failure, don’t worry. I’m sure there will be many more of those to come.
